Frequently Asked Questions

Built on Dr. John Nash Ott's foundational photobiology research.

What Makes SOLshine Different

What makes the light emitted from SOLshine Photo Nutrition different from other full-spectrum lights?

Most products marketed as "full-spectrum" emit only visible wavelengths—they do not include near-infrared (NIR) or ultraviolet (UV) light. Research has documented that LED lighting without balanced NIR is harmful to biology, particularly the eyes. See: Retinal damage induced by commercial LEDs.

SOLshine Photo Nutrition includes:

  • Trace UV at 350 nm — replicating the immune and cellular benefits of natural sunlight
  • Five distinct NIR wavelengths (780, 810, 830, 850, 900 nm) — essential for mitochondrial ATP production and melatonin regulation
  • Enhanced red spectrum (CRI R9 at 97 average) — critical for retinal health and cellular repair
  • Balanced visible spectrum with a curve similar to natural sunlight

This complete spectral profile is what Dr. John Nash Ott documented as necessary for living organisms to function optimally. SOLshine refers to this as Nutritional Light Technology™ (NLT).

How does SOLshine build on Dr. Ott's work?

Dr. John Nash Ott pioneered photobiology and proved that living organisms require the full spectrum of natural sunlight—including ultraviolet and near-infrared wavelengths—to maintain optimal health. His foundational research documented how mal-illumination disrupts circadian rhythm, cellular function, and immunity.

SOLshine Photo Nutrition builds directly on Ott's discoveries:

  • Enhanced red content (CRI R9 at 97 average) based on Ott's research showing red light's critical role in retinal health and ATP production
  • Five distinct NIR wavelengths (780–900 nm) reflecting Ott's documentation that infrared is essential for mitochondrial energy and melatonin production
  • Measured trace UV (350 nm) consistent with Ott's evidence that natural sunlight's complete spectrum is necessary for cellular health

The designation "Nutritional Light" honors Ott's core insight: light is a nutrient, as essential to living systems as food or water. SOLshine's work is an extension of Dr. Ott's legacy, not a replacement of it.

How does SOLshine full-spectrum with NIR compare to red light therapy?

As full-spectrum light pioneers (Ott Light Systems, 1987–97), SOLshine refers to FSL with NIR as Nutritional Light Technology™—the fullest spectrum light available.

Red light therapy (RLT), also called photobiomodulation (PBM), isolates specific wavelengths rather than delivering the complete spectrum. It has well-documented benefits for pain management, wound healing, and cellular energy.

A useful analogy: Nutritional Light Technology is like a multivitamin—the complete spectrum in natural proportion. Red light therapy is like an individual vitamin—targeted and therapeutic but not comprehensive.

SOLshine products include the red and NIR wavelengths that make RLT effective, as part of the complete spectrum. Learn more about photobiomodulation and SOLshine's approach.

Product Differences

What is the difference between SOL bioBulb and SOL PhotoVites?

SOL PhotoVites is a therapeutic light therapy device for timed morning sessions to synchronize circadian rhythm, and an all-day NIR device to counter blue light during computer work.

  • Dual modes: Mode 1 (full-spectrum + NIR, 15-minute timed) and Mode 2 (NIR-only, 15-minute timed)
  • Recommended morning protocol: 30 minutes total = Mode 1 followed by Mode 2
  • SAD Rated: 13,470 LUX @ 2 feet
  • DC technology: zero flicker, exceptionally low EMF

SOL bioBulb is an all-day ambient light designed to shower personal nutritional light continuously—like a grow light that showers a plant.

  • Fits standard light fixtures (E26/E27 base) for seamless integration
  • Ideal for reading, crafting, computing, or general ambient lighting
  • SAD Rated: 10,940 LUX @ 2 feet
  • Non-dimmable (on/off only), 30,000-hour lifespan
What is the difference in health benefits between the bioBulb and PhotoVites?

The therapeutic benefits are the same—both reduce the risk of mal-illumination and circadian disruption, support ATP production, and provide NIR and red light for retinal health and cellular repair.

The differences are in intensity, features, and recommended use:

  • PhotoVites delivers higher lux (13,470 vs. 10,940), timed sessions, and dual-mode operation for therapeutic precision
  • bioBulb is optimized for continuous all-day ambient light nutrition without requiring deliberate therapy sessions
  • Both may be used throughout the day for energy support
  • For circadian support, all lights after sundown should be reduced and shifted to red light where possible
What is the difference between the bioBulb and the SOL Telescope?

The SOL Telescope includes a SOL bioBulb mounted on an adjustable telescoping gooseneck floor stand. The bioBulb alone fits into existing fixtures; the Telescope provides a freestanding, adjustable delivery system for therapy, desk work, and ambient use.

  • bioBulb alone: Drop-in replacement for existing light fixtures
  • Telescope: Standalone adjustable floor light with gooseneck for flexible positioning (therapy, computer work, ambient)
Can the Telescope be used as my only light source in a room?

For personal workspace use: yes. The Telescope is designed as an all-day personal ambient light—like a grow light that showers a plant. Position it at your desk or reading area and it serves as your primary light source for that zone.

For general room lighting: no. The bioBulb is not designed to illuminate an entire room. It delivers therapeutic and ambient light within a personal range (2–4 feet), not across a large space.

For morning light therapy: yes, with limitations. At 10,940 LUX @ 2 feet, it delivers therapeutic intensity—but without the timed, dual-mode features of the PhotoVites.

Technology and Specifications

What nanometers does SOLshine light use?

SOLshine Nutritional Light Technology spans:

  • Trace UV at 350 nm
  • Full visible spectrum with a curve similar to natural sunlight
  • Five distinct NIR wavelengths: 780, 810, 830, 850, and 900 nm
  • Drops off at 1000 nm (no far-infrared)

View the spectral power distribution (SPD) test for a visual representation.

Why are some of the SOL PhotoVites NIR LEDs faintly glowing red?

The shorter near-infrared wavelengths (780 nm) are closest to visible red light and appear as a faint red glow. The longer NIR wavelengths (810, 830, 850, 900 nm) are completely invisible to the human eye. All five NIR wavelengths are functioning properly when you see this faint glow.

Why do some LEDs in the SOL bioBulb appear not to be working?

All 18 LEDs are functioning properly. The brightness of the full-spectrum white light washes out the faint glow of the near-infrared LEDs, making approximately half appear unlit. Those LEDs are actively emitting five distinct NIR wavelengths—they are simply invisible within the bright white light environment.

What is the wattage of SOLshine products?
  • SOL bioBulb: 10 watts
  • SOL PhotoVites: 72 watts (DC 12V, 6A)

Both are universal voltage (110V–230V). No transformer is required. If using internationally, an inexpensive plug adapter compatible with your local outlets may be needed.

Have you tested PhotoVites for flickering and EMF?

Yes. SOL PhotoVites utilizes DC (direct current) technology, ensuring:

  • Zero flicker
  • Exceptionally low EMF levels
  • Meets Swedish standard for electric and magnetic fields at 12 inches or more from the device
Do the lights produce heat?

Minimal heat. The NIR component in SOLshine products is non-thermal photobiomodulation—unlike far-infrared saunas, which use high heat. SOLshine's photobiological effects are photochemical (wavelength absorption by cellular structures), not thermal.

Why are SOLshine lights white rather than yellow?

All full-spectrum lights appear white because white light contains all wavelengths of the visible spectrum together—the same way sunlight appears white at noon. A yellow light is by definition limited-spectrum, missing key wavelengths. The biological benefits associated with full-spectrum light require the complete, balanced spectrum that only appears white.

I read that SOLshine products contain UV light. Should I be concerned?

No. SOLshine products contain a trace amount of UV-A light at 350 nm—the wavelength range supported by research as beneficial for immune function and cellular health. This is not the UVB range (280–320 nm) that causes sunburn or the higher-energy UVC range. The trace UV in SOLshine replicates the proportion found in natural indoor sunlight. Learn more about UV light and health.

Usage and Protocol

What is SOLshine's recommended use?

SOLshine should be used daily for light hygiene, all year long—not just seasonally for SAD.

SOL PhotoVites (morning therapy):

  • Position at eye level, 12–24 inches away
  • Morning protocol: 30 minutes total (Mode 1: 15 minutes full-spectrum + NIR, followed by Mode 2: 15 minutes NIR-only)
  • May also be used throughout the day for a natural energy boost
  • NIR Mode 2 is beneficial at night to aid sleep without disrupting melatonin

SOL bioBulb (all-day ambient):

  • Position in existing fixtures (desk lamp, overhead, clip-on) for continuous ambient light nutrition
  • Ideal for reading, crafting, computing, or general lighting
  • Provides all-day full-spectrum exposure in the spaces you occupy

SOL Telescope (adjustable therapy + ambient):

  • Morning therapy: Position gooseneck above head, 12–24 inches away, for 45 minutes
  • Computer work: Position beside monitor to counter blue light and EMF
  • All-day ambient: Adjust to provide general room lighting
What is the recommended usage time for the SOL Telescope?

For light therapy:

  • Position above head, 12–24 inches away
  • Morning sessions of approximately 45 minutes recommended
  • Daily use for optimal results
  • Adjust duration and distance based on personal comfort and response

For environmental lighting:

  • May be used all day to provide nutritional light for people, pets, and plants
  • For computer use: position to the right or left between you and the monitor, 12–24 inches above head, to shower both user and keyboard with full-spectrum light
Can I use SOLshine at night?

It is not recommended. When the sun goes down, circadian biology expects reduced light and a shift toward red wavelengths. Bright full-spectrum light at night suppresses melatonin production. If evening use is necessary, use PhotoVites in NIR-only Mode 2, which does not interfere with sleep. Reduce screen time one to two hours before bedtime to counter the effect of high-energy visible (HEV) blue light on melatonin.

Will SOLshine give me a tan?

No. The trace UV in SOLshine (350 nm UV-A) is insufficient to trigger melanin production. Tanning requires UVB (280–320 nm), which is not present in SOLshine products.

Can I wear eyeglasses while using SOLshine?

Yes, though eyeglasses may partially filter the light, reducing the intensity of absorption. Removing eyeglasses is recommended when feasible. When using the bioBulb, positioning it above your head ensures the light is less likely to be filtered by your glasses.

Safety and Side Effects

Are there any contraindications or side effects?

With any new product, start low and slow. Anyone with a medical condition should consult their physician before use.

On rare occasions, a side effect resembling drinking too much coffee may occur—mild edginess or restlessness depending on individual sensitivity. If this occurs, reduce use time or increase distance from the light source.

Can SOLshine hurt my eyes?

SOLshine will not damage your eyes by glancing at it, but it is bright and not intended to be looked at directly. The wellness benefits come from ambient light exposure—like sunlight at noon—not from staring into the light source.

SOLshine products actively support eye health by emitting NIR and red light, which help reduce retinal inflammation by priming retinal cells for repair and regeneration.

Is SOLshine safe for children?

Yes. SOLshine is safe for children of all ages. Research documents that poor or inappropriate lighting in schools adversely affects children's health and ability to learn, while full-spectrum lighting enhances scholastic performance and reduces hyperactivity.

Light Health and Science

Can SOLshine be used for seasonal affective disorder (SAD)?

Yes. SOLshine benefits SAD sufferers—but it addresses more than SAD alone.

SAD is a sub-syndrome of mal-illumination—the broader condition Dr. John Nash Ott identified as living under incomplete light spectra. SOLshine's full-spectrum + NIR approach addresses the root cause (mal-illumination) rather than only the seasonal symptom.

When SOLshine began its research in March 1988, a People Magazine cover proclaimed "Full Spectrum Light CURES Depression"—a claim that introduced the concept of light therapy to mainstream consciousness. Three decades of subsequent research confirmed and expanded what Dr. Ott had documented: light is medicine. The future of preventive health has light at its center.

What is mal-illumination?

Mal-illumination is Dr. John Nash Ott's term for living under incomplete light spectra—artificial lighting that filters out key wavelengths the body requires. As Ott stated: "Mal-illumination is to light as malnutrition is to food."

Modern artificial lighting—fluorescent panels, standard LEDs, incandescent bulbs—systematically removes UV, NIR, and balanced red spectrum from the light environment. The biological effects are measurable: disrupted circadian rhythm, impaired cellular repair, altered hormone production, reduced immune response, and increased risk of metabolic syndrome.

SOLshine products are designed to reverse mal-illumination by delivering the complete, balanced spectrum of natural sunlight indoors.

What is the relationship between light and circadian rhythm?

Light entering the eyes is the primary signal that synchronizes your body's master clock—the suprachiasmatic nucleus in the hypothalamus. This clock regulates cortisol production, melatonin timing, immune function, metabolism, and sleep-wake cycles.

Morning full-spectrum light exposure activates this synchronization at the critical neurological window. Mal-illumination—working under incomplete artificial light all day—desynchronizes this system, contributing to sleep disorders, mood disturbance, metabolic dysfunction, and immune suppression.

Dr. Ott documented the mechanism: light wavelength acts as a direct biological trigger, not mere illumination. SOLshine products are engineered to deliver this trigger with the spectral precision necessary for circadian entrainment.

SOLshine is the fullest-spectrum nutritional light source that includes 'visible & invisible' light wavelengths akin to natural sunlight. SOLshine emits “balanced” full-spectrum light (FSL) based on an innovative formula unlike any other SAD bright light or FSL.

SOLshine Photo-Nutrition builds on the technology of the father of full-spectrum light, Dr. John Ott. SOLshine intrinsically improves the spectral quality and biological benefits by increasing the CRI (color rendering index) of R9 red to 97 CRI (average), adding a “99” CRI R15, a trace amount of ultraviolet light and five (5) different wavelengths of essential near-infrared light (NIR).

CRI R9 is a very important metric because many light sources will be lacking in red content, but this fact will be hidden due to the averaging out of CRI calculations which do not include R9.
