THE TRUTH ABOUT RED LIGHT THERAPY

Red light therapy is a powerful biohack. But is it the whole story?

Red and near-infrared light therapy has become one of the most exciting tools in the biohacker's toolbox. And for good reason.

Research into red and near-infrared wavelengths has generated enormous interest in their potential relationship to mitochondrial function, cellular energy, recovery, inflammation, brain function and other aspects of human biology.

But there's a bigger question that deserves attention:

What if red and near-infrared light are only part of the light-biohacking equation?

Your body didn't evolve under red-light panels. It evolved under sunlight. And sunlight isn't a single wavelength—or even a small group of wavelengths.

"Each separate frequency or color of sunlight has 'nutritional' value for cells."

 — Dr Jack Kruse, Neurosurgeon

THE BIOHACKING PARADOX

  • Think about how we approach nutrition. We don't normally argue that one nutrient should replace every other nutrient.
  • We recognize that the body requires a broad range of nutritional inputs. Light deserves a similar perspective.

"We have finally learned that light is a nutrient much like food, and like food, the wrong kind can make us ill and the right kind can help keep us well."

— Dr. John Ott, Health and Light, 3,000,000+ copies sold

For millions of years, humans experienced the full spectrum of natural daylight—Today, however, many people spend most of their lives indoors under electrically generated light. The result isn't simply less sunlight. It means a very different spectral environment that contributes to mal-illumination.

This broader perspective is the foundation of SOLshine Photo Nutrition™. We typically think of nutrition as something we consume, but light is also a biological input. Most importantly, early morning light is absolutely essential to synchronize our daily biological rhythm and to ignite metabolism.

Optimize your light before you optimize everything else.

That is where the concept of photo nutrition and Light Hygiene becomes important.

LIGHT HYGIENE: GET YOUR LIGHT RIGHT

Light hygiene means developing daily light habits that are more consistent with the natural solar cycle. That can include:

Morning:
Get outdoor daylight exposure as early in the day as practical.

Daytime:
Seek bright, broad-spectrum natural light whenever possible.

Indoors:
Consider the spectrum and intensity of the artificial light surrounding you for hours at a time.

Evening:
Reduce excessive bright and short-wavelength-rich light as bedtime approaches.

Night:
Protect darkness and allow the biological night to remain dark. The goal isn't to eliminate technology. It's to create a healthier relationship with light.

RED LIGHT THERAPY STILL MATTERS

None of this means that red and near-infrared light therapy should be dismissed. Quite the opposite.

  • Red and NIR therapy may be an important tool for targeted photobiomodulation. But targeted therapy and everyday environmental exposure are not necessarily the same thing.
  • A red/NIR panel can deliver selected wavelengths at a specific intensity and for a specific duration.
  • Sunlight provides a much broader spectrum that supports life itself.

“The power of light and color lies in a simple fact — light and life are inseparable. Light is the energetic foundation of the experience we call life.”

— Dr. Jacob Liberman, Light Medicine of the Future

One is targeted light therapy. The other is your natural light environment.
  • Optimum biohacking involves understanding—and using—both.
That is the idea behind Nutritional Light Technology.
  • Rather than focusing exclusively on one portion of the spectrum, the goal is to think about light more holistically—with attention to spectrum, timing, intensity and daily exposure.

THE ENLIGHTENED BIOHACKING APPROACH

  • The objective isn't to replace red-light therapy. It's to put red-light therapy into a much bigger biological context.

  • Red light therapy may be one of the most exciting biohacks available today. But red light isn't sunlight. And sunlight isn't just red light.

  • The most enlightened approach is not to choose between red light therapy and full-spectrum light. It's to understand what each can potentialy do and—when each makes sense. That's the bigger opportunity in light biohacking.
